OFFSHORE

Our first class industrial safety expertise in action

Project Overview

The Brent field, located in the North Sea, is one of the most prolific oil and gas reserves operated by Shell UK Limited. With decades of successful extraction, the field's decommissioning phase has commenced, including seabed debris surveys in preparation for a full clearance. Our client undertook these surveys within 500mzones around the Brent platforms — Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and Delta. Given the potential hazards associated with hydrogen sulphide (H2S) exposure, Total Safety was contracted to develop and implement a comprehensive H2S Contingency Plan to protect personnel and ensure safe operations in this high-risk environment

Client Challenges

  • H2S Exposure Risks - H2S is a toxic gas that poses severe health risks to personnel. Given its presence in the Brent Charlie 100m zone, safety protocols were essential to prevent exposure through inhalation and to mitigate any emergency related to accidental gas release.

  • Operational Scope and Site Conditions - The Brent platforms span various zones, each with unique debris and gas hazards. Precautionary measures required meticulous planning and effective monitoring to protect personnel from potential gas exposure.

  • Training Requirements - Effective use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and awareness of H2S hazards were critical to maintaining a safe working environment. Therefore, tailored training was necessary to equip personnel with the skills to handle potential H2S exposure emergencies.

Our Approach & Solutions

Emergency Response Teams

Total Safety implemented a thorough H2SContingency Plan, which included the installation of gas detection systems, setting up emergency muster points, and defining evacuation procedures. The plan provided detailed guidance on detecting and responding to any H2S release, with set alarm thresholds at 5 ppm (low) and 10 ppm (high)to ensure prompt response and evacuation measures.

On-Site and Quayside Training for Crew

All personnel received H2S awareness training before work commenced. Training covered critical aspects such as the properties of H2S, detection techniques, and the use of personal H2S gas detectors.

Emergency procedures, including donning and doffing of RPE, were demonstrated to ensure personnel could respond swiftly in case of a gas release.

Deployment of Specialised Detection and Safety Equipment Regular

Total Safety supplied both fixed and portable H2Sdetection systems, such as BlacklineSafety G7 EXO and Honeywell BW Clip personal detectors, to continuously monitor H2S levels.

Emergency life-support apparatus (ELSA) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) were strategically placed at muster points for immediate use.

Regular Equipment Inspections and Safety Drills

Project Outcomes

Enhanced Safety Measures

The contingency plan successfully established a robust safety framework, minimising personnel exposure risks to H2S. With real-time monitoring and clear response protocols, personnel were equipped to detect and respond to gas hazards effectively.

Increased Preparedness Through Training & Drills

Total Safety’s targeted training sessions significantly increased crew awareness and competence in H2Shazard management, ensuring a safer work environment. The training sessions were instrumental in familiarizing personnel with emergency procedures and equipment.

Operational Continuity With Safety Assurance

The project proceeded smoothly, with no recorded incidents of H2S exposure thanks to Total Safety’s proactive measures and regular system checks. This approach minimised downtime, allowing our client to complete its debris survey activities safely and efficiently.

Daily and weekly inspections of all RPE and gas detection systems were mandated to ensure equipment reliability. A structured maintenance protocol was followed, with specific drills and routines for emergency response team members to practice H2S evacuation and monitoring procedures.

Through detailed planning, targeted training, and real-time monitoring, Total Safety ensured a secure environment for high-risk offshore operations, protecting all personnel during this critical phase of the Brent field's decommissioning.
